Hjelde, who spent six years at the City Ground earlier in his career, has eventually gained international clearance from the FA after his previous side Buscan Icons held his registration forcing him to miss Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wigan.

Forest boss Joe Kinnear told the club's offical website: "Jon had to prove to me that he deserved a contract and I've seen enough now to know that he does,"

The 32-year-old's last senior game for the Reds was against Sheffield United in the playoff semi-final defeat where he contributed towards Forest's third goal on the night.

Kinnear added: "He has got better and better with every training session as his fitness levels have improved.

"Jon is an experienced player and we need guys like him around. We had it last year with Des Walker and Jon fits that bill."

Meanwhile, Forest have been linked with West Bromich Albion's battling midfielder Sean Gregan.

The former Preston captain has handed-in a transfer request at the Hawthorns and will be allowed to leave for around £300,000-400,000.

Cardiff City, Leeds United and Burnley are also supposedly interested with the Reds next opponents Ipswich Town also keeping tabs on the situation.
