The battle of the top two at the City Ground was settled by Nicky Southall's early goal and Reds boss Colin Calderwood said afterwards: "Our character showed. My players never lack desire.

"We came to a shuddering halt against Scunthorpe (losing 4-0) but we've put ourselves back in a good position and the boys can be very proud.

"City put us under a lot of pressure late on it was a real barrage but we stood firm."

Opposite number Gary Johnson felt his side deserved at least a point, saying: "I felt we may we have had at least one penalty and I'm disappointed not to come away with at least a draw.

"We gave it a little go at the end but didn't create too many first-class chances but neither did they.

"But we will both be up there when we meet again in March."
