Every Nottingham Forest fan will have their views on the events that have taken place at the City Ground over the past 36 hours as it was confirmed by the club on Sunday that Billy Davies had been sacked before Steve McClaren was unveiled as the manager of the Reds a day later.
Davies could divide opinions at times with his outspoken views on the transfer policy that he had to work under as well as the usual gripes about tactics and team selection that every manager must face. Overall though the Scot was a popular figure who can point to a fantastic record as a manager throughout his career and at Forest in particular.
McClaren has already attracted some negative press, the baggage of his spell in charge of England in particular making him a soft target on his return to club management in this country. He too however can point to a track record that includes plenty of positive moments plus a wide range of experience encompassing spells as an assistant manager at the country's top club, as a boss in his own right with sides at home and abroad and in what is seen as the toughest managerial job in the business.
But for better or worse the Forest hierarchy have made their choice and they deserve credit for avoiding the kind of unseemly scramble that sometimes follows the sacking of a manager. The criticism that axeing Davies attracted would have been multiplied tenfold had the search for his successor dragged on.
Instead, within 24 hours the Reds have made an ambitious appointment which will be judged by only one criteria; whether the club is back in the Premier League in the next couple of years.
