The popular former Nottingham Forest player was a coach at Newcastle United and assisted John Carver when he stepped up to be caretaker manager following Alan Pardew's departure.
Carver has also reportedly left his role with ex-City Ground boss Steve McClaren the clear favourite to take the post.
