Brown replaces Darren Ferguson in charge of the Lancashire club and his main priority is clear with North End adrift at the foot of the Championship.
Before that however his first game in charge will be Saturday's FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest, whose boss Billy Davies was surprisingly linked with a return to his former club earlier in the week.
Brown will be assisted by Brian Horton in his attempts to keep Preston in the division.
