The 19-year-old Aston Villa wideman is thought to be Stuart Pearce's third and final target for a loan move during January, following Villa Park teammate Gary Gardner and Chelsea's Todd Kane.
A deal was thought to hinge on whether Villa landed Manchester City misfit Scott Sinclair and that loan has gone through on Friday afternoon.
Pearce was quoted earlier this week as saying: "We are waiting for a phone call on one (target). We are still looking to improve the squad if we possibly can."
Meanwhile, the Reds boss could have striker Matty Fryatt back in contention for this Saturday's game against Millwall although Michael Mancienne is unlikely to feature as he continues his comeback after injury.
Young defender Louis Laing has joined Motherwell on loan for the rest of the season.
