The 33-year-old left Forest for Leyton Orient last summer but has joined the Reds for their pre-season training camp in Sweden.
Already part of that squad are strikers Nicky Maynard and Paul Taylor, both on trial after becoming free agents at the end of last season.
The Nottingham Post reports that Dougie Freedman is looking at all three players as potential back-up for his first-choice forwards.
