The former Nottingham Forest star was signed from Cobh Ramblers by Clough in 1990 and said: "With the amount of time I spent at (Manchester) United, Alex Ferguson was my biggest inspiration.

"But without Brian Clough I wouldn't have got to Alex Ferguson."

The new Sunderland manager added: "Brian's ideas were simple but there was a genius behind it."
