Megson begins planning for League One

Both Megson and chief executive Mark Arthur have promised a major clearout after relegation from the Championship and Arthur told the club website: "The first thing we've got to address is the players we've already got.

"There are players Gary will definitely want to keep and there are players whose contracts are up but who he would like to stay at the club.

"Then there are players who are under contract who, in an ideal world, Gary wouldn't want to be any part of Nottingham Forest's future. It's going to be a long summer but we've got to assemble a squad for next season that's going to be competitive."

The advent of transfer windows in the Football League will make it harder for Megson to offload all of the players he wants though.

Loan strikers David Johnson and Marlon King for instance will still be under contract and if they are not sold before the end of August will definitely be at the club until the following January at least.

With Forest’s wage bill towards the higher end of the Championship it may be that cutting the squad by the amount that Megson wants proves difficult.
