However, plans to create the biggest stadium in the East Midlands, enabling the club to stage major sporting events and international matches at The City ground, hinge upon Forest winning promotion back to the Premiership.

Forest chief executive Mark Arthur said: "A new stand is very much in our thoughts for the long-term strategy of the club.

"We owe it to our supporters, who themselves have invested in the club, to look at ways of projecting us into the 21st century.

"They can be assured that nothing would happen until we were convinced the strategic plan was financially viable.

"We would only build from the soundest of foundations."
