The 29-year-old spent the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Championship rivals Reading, helping them reach the FA Cup semi-finals and where he was voted this week as the club's best signing of the season.

Mackie, a 2013 summer signing for the Reds from Queens Park Rangers, has made 45 league appearances to date for Forest.

Back in March he made it clear that he could still see a future for himself by the River Trent, playing under Freedman.

"I'm at a tremendous football club in Nottingham Forest and things have changed there," he said. "There's been a change and I really admire the new manager."

Another loanee who has made a big impact away from the City Ground is Robert Tesche, the German midfielder having ended the season at Birmingham City.

A poll in the Birmingham Mail identified Tesche as the top transfer target for Blues fans this summer.
