Paterson An X Factor Signing?

Last updated : 02 July 2013 By Forest

Nottingham Forest are closing in on the signing of 21-year-old winger/striker Jamie Paterson from Walsall having beaten off competition from Huddersfield and Middlesbrough to make the player their fourth capture of the summer.

Billy Davies will be confident in the qualities that his first three signings, Darius Henderson, Eric Lichaj and Gonzalo Jara, bring to his team but Paterson represents a slightly different type of signing for the Reds than those they have made in recent years.

A young player from the lower divisions in England, hungry to prove himself at a higher level and with a bigger club and potentially capable of taking Championship defences by surprise in the early months of the campaign.

Not perhaps since the signing of Joe Garner from Carlisle in 2008 has a signing like this been made and he had a Premier League upbringing at Blackburn. It's a gamble (like all transfers) but a calculated one that Paterson, after enjoying the best season of his short career, can continue his upward progression.

***Update***The £1m+ signing of Paterson has been confirmed while the Reds are also being linked with experienced goalkeeper Dorus De Vries of Wolves.

"I believe he (Paterson) will play in the Premier League one day and this was an opportunity for him to pursue that," Walsall manager Dean Smith told the Express & Star.
