The 20-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, has been offered a new deal but both parties have disagreed with certain aspects - alerting Forest boss Joe Kinnear.

Commons told The Sentinel: "Stoke have done things that have shown they are keen for me to stay, but there are some things they have not put in the contract that I have wanted."

Commons, a lifelong Forest fan who grew-up in Mansfield, has made no secret at his desire to pull-on the red shirt of Nottingham Forest one day.

He added: "I supported them as a youngster and played with them as a five or six-year-old. So I've been involved with them since I was young.

"They have always been a club I'd hoped to play for."

Forest's undisclosed bid for the highly-rated player was rejected but Forest boss Joe Kinnear has obviously put the youngster high on his list of potential targets.

Commons added: "I've never met Joe Kinnear and never spoken with him, but he's done a good job."

"It is good that a club of that quality has shown interest in me."

Meanwhile, Forest have been linked with Wolves defender Paul Butler. The 31-year-old has turned down a new one-year deal at Molineux which has alerted new Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell should £25,000-a-week Michael Duberry leave Elland Road this summer.
