Forest boss Gary Megson had a bid for Rotherham keeper Mike Pollitt rejected – and then saw him produce a defiant display.

Megson who collected £ 8million form the sale of Michael Dawson and Andy Reid to Spurs, was told his £100,000 offer was 'derisory'.

But in a drab match where chances were at a premium Pollitt sparkled when Forest threatened a breakthrough.

Aided and abetted by bloodied skipper Phil Gilchrist he kept Forest at bay as tried to boost their survival hopes.

Bottom club Rotherham are virtually doomed and second bottom Forest are desperate to haul themselves clear.

But when Forest's golden chance of a winner arrived in the 59th minute Pollitt produced a top draw save to deny Kris Commons.

An early chance fell for Rotherham striker Martin Butler when defender Chris Doig missed the chance to head clear, Doig recovered quickly and slide in with a last-ditch tackle.

Rotherham lost skipper Phil Gilchrist who went off after nine minutes after taking a kick in the head. He returned after ten minutes of treatment he returned with his head stitched and heavily bandaged.

He was quickly into the action again when his bandaged head blocked a stinging 25-yard shot from Commons.

And it was Gilchrist who produced a chance at the other end with a glancing header from Paul McLaren's ball into the area but it drifted wide.

Forest keeper Paul Gerrard produced a smart save after Jamal Campbell-Ryce hit an angled shot from 20 yards.

Commons came up with another chance for Forest before the break but he hasty 25-yarder was just wide.

Rotherham keeper Pollitt's only save of the first half came in the dying seconds when he mopped up a header from Gareth Taylor.

Substitute Eugen Bopp should have given Forest the lead with his first touch after coming off the bench in 52 minutes.

The ball was teed up by Shaun Derry as he raced into the area but he blazed his first time effort high and wide from ten yards.

Pollitt flapped at a cross from Commons soon afterwards and this time Bopp pounced to smash the follow up goalwards but it smashed into a crowd of defenders in front of Pollitt.

And in the 59th minute Pollitt produced a super reaction save after Commons topped a weaving run with a fierce drive from 12 yards.

Rotherham – pinned back for most of the second period – broke out in the 70th minute, but Michael Proctor headed straight at Gerrard when Campbell-Ryce crossed.
