Steve McClaren had hinted after the opening friendly fixture against a Spurs XI that he expected some movement in the market early this week and has been rewarded with the signing of Jonathan Greening.
The experienced former Middlesbrough, West Brom and Fulham man will be joined in the Reds midfield next season by Guy Moussi, who will sign a new contract with the club after talks with McClaren.
It seems the former England boss has persuaded Moussi to stay despite plenty of interest from the Premier League, his decision effectively making it two new signings in one day at the City Ground.
