Book review - The Legends of Nottingham Forest

Last updated : 07 September 2007 By Forest
Written by Dave Bracegirdle (known to many from his work on Soccer Saturday) who went to his first Nottingham Forest game as a youngster in October 1966, the book moves in alphabetical order from Colin Addison through to Tony Woodcock with quotes from the men themselves and from the fans who watched them.

Presenting the book alphabetically rather than in chronological order presents a nice contrast for the reader who can be reading about Roy Keane one minute and Dr Tinsley Lindley (a centre-forward from the 1880's who insisted on wearing his everyday shoes to play in) the next!

The Brian Clough years are obviously well-represented but the heroes of Forest's FA Cup triumphs in 1898 and 1959 are also here, including goalkeeper Dennis Allsop who kept Derby at bay in the first of those triumphs and Jack Burkitt, captain of the 1959 side.

Inevitably some names both in the book and omitted from it will be the subject of discussion and the author gets in first by acknowledging that Pierre van Hooijdonk's inclusion is controversial.

That however reflects the rich history of the club from the man who scored Forest's first Football League goal (Alex Higgins!) to modern-day favourite Kris Commons.

With a foreword by Lee Westwood and attractively presented, The Legends of Nottingham Forest will make an excellent present this Christmas (just over 100 days to go now!).

The book is out now. published by Breedon Books and priced at £16.99.

Forest Mad has two copies to give away, look out for the competition next week.
