Gemmill's World Cup goal against Holland in 1978 has been replayed on countless occasions since and has now been joined in Scottish football history by McFadden's 30-yard strike.

Gemmill told the Daily Record: "My goal was a million times better - nah, I'm only kidding. McFadden's goal was better than mine when you consider what was at stake.

"Three points were hanging on that goal which makes it a very, very important goal.

"The keeper Mickael Landreau may look back and think he could have done better but it was a wonderful strike and that is what football is all about. "
