Lewis McGugan continued his superb run of form with an equalising goal after Jordon Mutch had handed hosts Watford an early lead.
The result leaves Billy Davies' side in the lower half of the Championship but within striking distance of the play-off places although the manager afterwards was in one of his more downbeat moods.
"Because of the lack of expansion when we were on a high point and we finished third then what you see is what you get with this team," he warned.
"They'll win, they'll lose and they'll draw and they are what they are.
"We are not a top six side and anybody who thinks we are is like comparing that to Britain ruling the world as far as I'm concerned.
"We are what we are, we're getting what we're getting, I can ask no more of this team."
